Naira Dips to Worst Low! Now N338 to $1

The naira hit a record low of N338 against the dollar on Friday.

This is as the Bankers Committee announced its decision to stop providing foreign exchange for school fees and medical bills payment.

The Bankers Committee had on Thursday announced the decision to include school fees and medical bills among the items that are not valid for forex.

The trial of the Senate President, Dr. Bukola Saraki, on 13 counts of false assets declaration is to resume March 10 before the Code of Conduct Tribunal.

Our correspondent confirmed that the CCT issued hearing notices and served same on parties to the case on Friday.

This followed a letter written on behalf of the Federal Government by the lead prosecuting counsel, Mr. Rotimi Jacobs (SAN), intimating the tribunal of the recent judgement of the Supreme Court validating the trial.

The Delta state police command has paraded six Hausa suspects, who confessed to the heinous kidnap and murder of the traditional ruler of Ubulu-Uku, Delta State. Addressing a press conference Friday, the State Commissioner of Police, CP Alkali Baba Usman said a of total six persons have been arrested including a female teenager and the corpse of one of the suspects.

According to CP Alkali, the monarch was kidnapped on 5th January, 2016, in the company of one Pastor Afamefuna Charles Ugbo, who later escaped from the custody of the abductors.

President Buhari Resumes Office, Presidency releases Statement

President Muhammadu Buhari on Thursday, formally resumed work in his office at the Presidential Villa, Abuja, after a six-day vacation. Buhari had returned to the country on Wednesday from London where he spent the short vacation that started on Friday last week.

Buhari had written the National Assembly, asking Vice President Yemi Osinbajo to act in his absence.

President Muhammadu Buhari has reportedly appointed Bashir Ahmad as his Personal Assistant on New Media.

Confirming the appointment was Ahmad himself via a tweet.

A man generally identified in his neigbourhood as a thug, Kevin Wilson, killed his unborn son when he stood on the stomach of his ex-girlfriend, Malorie Bantala, who was heavily pregnant with their son, and then made his getaway on a moped.

Wilson was soon arrested and charged to court. He was consequenty sentenced to life in prison with a minimum term of 16 years for carrying out the attack.

His 17-year-old accomplice, who cannot be named for legal reasons, was sentenced to 10 years in detention with a further four years on extended licence.

The Managing Director (MD), Spectranet Ltd., Mr David Venn, on Wednesday said Nigerians would no longer pay for calls and Short Message Services (SMS), on mobile networks before the end of 2019.

The News Agency of Nigeria, (NAN) reports that Venn made this prediction at an interactive session with newsmen in Lagos. He noted that with the fast growing usage of social media applications, such as Skype, Imo, Whatsapp, BlackBerry Messenger, Facebook Messenger, telecommunications had allowed subscribers to use their data service to make calls and sms.

After waiting for about two weeks, Bello appointed Hon. Simon Achuba as the deputy governor of the state.

Achuba filled the vacuum after Hon. James Faleke, the running mate to the late Prince Abubakar Audu, refused to accept the position of deputy governor, saying he ought to be the governor.

He is an indigene of Ibaji local government area, though unconfirmed reports have it that he is originally from Aguleri in Anambra state.

Following his screening and confirmation by the Kogi State House of Assembly, Simon Achuba, has been sworn in as the Deputy Governor of the state.

A woman and her driver cheated death by a whisker on Tuesday after their delivery van somersaulted and went up in flames on the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway.

The vehicle, with number plate, Ogun AAB 163 XA, was heading towards the Sagamu area to deliver some cartons of sausage rolls to customers, when the accident happened around 11am at the Ibafo end of the expressway.

It was learnt that the van was on top speed when one of the back tyres burst, and the vehicle somersaulted. Sympathisers and other passersby quickly moved in and extricated the two occupants from the van.

I'm Your Father and Always Here for You, Gov. Wike Tells Dakuku Peterside

While alluding to statements made by his opponent, Rivers State Governor, Nyesom Wike, has called on the governorship candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC), in the April 11, 2015 guber election, Dakuku Peterside, to come and contribute his quota to the development of the state.

Speaking at an event held in Port Harcourt, the governor said it was wrong for Dakuku to have described himself as an 'orphan' at a stakeholders’ meeting with the hierarchy of the APC led by its National Chairman, Chief Odigie Oyegun.

In what is the latest in the spate of controversies dogging President Muhammadu Buhari’s 2016 budget, the Nigerian Federal Ministry of Health has disowned the budget proposal submitted on its behalf by the Ministry of Budget and National Planning.

Health Minister, Isaac Adewole, who addressed the Senate Committee on Health during its budget defence session on Monday, said the proposal drawn up by the ministry and submitted to the budget office had been doctored and that “foreign” appropriations, different from what was submitted, had been sneaked in.

PRESIDENT BUHARI PRESENTS 2016 APPROPRATION BILL IN ABUJA

According to Premium Times, On Tuesday December 22, 2015, President Muhammadu Buhari walked into a joint session of the National Assembly and presented the first annual budget proposal of his administration, ambitiously tagged: “The Budget of Change”.

After highlighting the economic challenges that confronted the country due to the fall in oil prices, the president vowed the budget would cut waste from government spending and its funds would only be used for public good.

“We are determined to ensure that our resources are managed prudently and utilized solely for the public good,” Mr. Buhari said. “To set the proper tone, one of our early decisions was the adoption of a zero based budgeting approach, which ensures that resources are aligned with government’s priorities and allocated efficiently.”

Rotimi Amaechi, a former Governor of Rivers State who is now Minister of Transportation, has reacted to the statement credited to Governor Nyesom Wike that he spent $150 million on APC presidential campaign.

A statement by his media office said “it continues to baffle us, like most right-thinking Nigerians, that Governor Wike will stand in a church, a solemn place of worship, and carelessly, brusquely tell such a profound lie.

“He condescendingly descended to falsely and indecorously shout corruption against Amaechi without providing a single shred of evidence to back his claims.

“The ‘story-story’ this time is about another phantom $150 million that Amaechi purportedly stole from Rivers State Government coffers and siphoned to his party, the All Progressives Congress, APC, within 18 days, from December 1 to 18 of 2014.

Nigeria's immediate past Minister of Finance Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala has reacted to reports that she's allegedly being investigated by the EFCC for embezzlement, calling media headlines misleading and untrue.

"We want to clarify that some of the media reports alleging that the EFCC is investigating former Minister of Finance, Dr Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, are misleading and untrue. This is clear from eye witness accounts of the Budget 2016 presentation by the EFCC at the House of Representatives and gaps in the reported stories.

The family of Lowo Oyediran-Ajanaku, who was allegedly stabbed to death by his wife, Yewande, (If you missed the story trail read here and here) was on Monday thrown into fresh mourning as the foster father of the deceased, Oyewole Ajanaku, reportedly died of shock, Punch reports.

The 89-year-old Ajanaku, who was the foster father of the France-based businessman developed some health issues on hearing that his nephew, Lowo, had been allegedly murdered by his wife.

He died of complications related to high blood pressure on Monday at Gbongan, in the Ayedaade Local Government Area of Osun State. It was revealed that the foster father took up the responsibility of Lowo following the death of his biological father in 1990.

In an exclusive interview with the Daily Telegraph, President Muhammadu Buhari, has disclosed that Nigeria’s biggest suspects in the ongoing anti-corruption war lives in the United Kingdom.

The president who declined to give the names of the suspects, also spoke on the fight againt Boko Haram insurgency, saying that his government was prepared to dialogue with the terrorists in order to bring back the over 200 abducted female students from Chibok community, Borno state.

A horror collision has left several people dead after two passenger trains collided in Germany this morning. The horrific incident happened near the town of Bad Aibling in Bavaria. It was gathered that one train reportedly derailed as a result of the collision, which happened on a single track.

Local police spokesman Jürgen Thalmeier said "several people have been killed in the crash". More than 150 passengers have been injured. Around 100 rescue workers are trying to cut passengers free from the wreckage, police say.

The 2 Brigade of the Nigerian Army, Port Harcourt, said yesterday that suspected cultists have destroyed a pipeline belonging to the Nigeria Agip Oil Company.

According to a statement issued yesterday evening, by the Assistant Director, Army Public Relations, Captain Eli Lazarus, he revealed that the incident occurred in the early hours of Sunday, February 7, at Agip’s gas facility in Akala Olu village in Oshie community, Ahoada West Local Government Area of Rivers State, thereby disrupting production activities.

Captain Lazarus added: “The group demanded for the release of a detained suspect-one Mr. Emmanuel Odum, currently undergoing interrogation in connection with pipeline vandalism and cult-related activities.

A man from Kisii set his wife and child on fire after his in-laws cancelled their marriage, News24 reports.

The incident which happened in Kenya has set his immediate family members in shock.

It was revealed that the two lovers who had been staying together for a year, had gone to seek blessings from the wife’s mother when the incident occurred.

The mother-in-law allegedly told Abraham Moseti that he could not marry Alice Okemwa because they were related. Angered and stupefied by the new revelation, Moseti resorted to ending everything by burning his family.

Nigeria coach Sunday Oliseh has apologised to the Nigeria Football Federation after his recent attacks on the federation as well as his perceived critics.

The NFF president Amaju Pinnick confirmed that Oliseh sent in the apology on Monday.

Okonjo-Iweala, Diezani and Aluko Are Under Investigation - EFCC Chairman Reveals

EFCC Chairman, Ibrahim Magu revealed on Monday, that the former Minister of Finance Minister, Dr. Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, is being investigated by the anti-corruption agency in connection with high level corruption perpetrated during the last administration.

According to The Nation, Magu, who spoke during the budget defence session with the House of Representatives Committee on Financial Crimes, added that a former Minister of Petroleum Resources, Mrs. Diezani Allison-Madueke, is also under the EFCC radar.
