The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency,
Kwara State Command, has apprehended a 37-year-old man, Mr. Samuel
Yawo, who allegedly had been impersonating the agency.
The Kwara State Commander, NDLEA, Mr.
Reuben Apea, on Friday said the suspect had been parading himself as an
officer of the NDLEA for the past three years.
He stated that investigation revealed
that Yawo had also been extorting money from the public, using a fake
identity card, which he allegedly fraudulently procured.
He added that the suspect was arrested in the Jebba Area Command of the NDLEA and transferred to the state headquarters.
Yawo, who claimed to be from Kaduna State
and only completed secondary school, pleaded for forgiveness, saying he
was led into the act by hardship.
The NDLEA commander also said the
command, between January and May, 2015, made a total seizure of
1,915,449 kilogrammes of hard drugs.
He stated that the command arrested 64 suspects, comprising 54 males and 10 females, within the period.
He added that on June 6, officials of the
command intercepted a truck at the Post Office end of the Muritala
Mohammed Road, Ilorin at about midnight.
He stated that NLDEA officials seized 1,076 kg of cannabis sativa packed in 131 bags in the truck.
He said the seizures signaled the influx of hard drugs into Kwara State, adding that the situation was very disturbing.
Apea said, “The activities of drug
peddlers have become alarming. They are becoming sophisticated and
prevalent among the youth, who erroneously believe the substance to be
safe.
“Drug joints are everwhere in the state.
Our youths are deeply involved, but the officers and men of the agency
are ready to fight and win the war to make the state free of drug
merchants.”
