US First Lady Michelle Obama landed in Britain last night for a two-day trip to promote education for girls. Mrs
Obama was greeted by US military families as she stepped off the plane
at London Stansted Airport, followed by her mother and two daughters.
The
51-year-old president's wife is visiting Britain to discuss her
campaigns for girls' education and better support for military families. Today
Mrs Obama is due to meet Prince Harry and have tea at Downing Street
with Prime Minister David Cameron and his wife Samantha.
The Obama family is on a week-long tour of Britain and Italy to promote Mrs Obama's Let Girls Learn initiative. This
morning Mrs Obama and her two daughters Sasha and Malia will visit at
Mulberry School for Girls in Tower Hamlets, east London.
They are joined on the trip by Mrs Obama's mother Marian Robinson, 77. Mrs
Obama will host a discussion with the director of the Research for
Equitable Access and Learning Centre at Cambridge University and a Peace
Corps volunteer.
Julia
Gillard, former prime minister of Australia and a strong advocate for
girls’ education, is also expected to join after for a Q&A session. Mulberry School for Girls is just a short drive from Elizabeth Garrett Anderson School which Mrs Obama visited in 2009.
In an
emotional speech, Mrs Obama was close to tears as she told pupils: 'We
are counting on every single one of you to be the best that you can be.'
She
is expected to make a similarly passionate plea to students during
today's event as she appeals for joint work between America and Britain
to boost education for adolescent girls across the world.
The Let Girls Learn initiative has been championed by Mrs Obama and her husband, US president Barack Obama.
